2021 Central Texas Ride May 6, 7 and 8, 2021

Debi Goode has provided this write up and most of the photos. Richard Kesselus and Don Henry also sent photos. Thanks so much for the report. Please enjoy!

THURSDAY May 6, 2021

We had 19 participants for the Early-Bird Dinner at Cedars

Mediterranean Grill in Bastrop. A good time was had by all!

FRIDAY May 7, 2021

The day started with coffee and donuts at 8:00 AM at Richard Kesselus’s home.  A pre-ride safety meeting for all 14 riders was held by Richard. Richard led the group through the local area back roads to reach the community of Paige, Tx (named after Don Paige of Abilene of course). After a gas stop, we proceeded South to the State Park in Smithville and we drove through the park, entered the Bastrop State Park, and continued back to the Kesselus home. The ride was 60 miles round trip shortened to allow preparation time for the famous FISH FRY DINNER.  Everyone enjoyed the fellowship and riding again. Chase was provided by Tommy and Debi Goode.

FRIDAY MAY 7, 2021 FISH FRY DINNER

Richard and Betty Kesselus graciously hosted the FISH FRY DINNER Friday evening. JJ Mooney fried up his delicious onion rings and everyone brought a side dish or dessert to complement the meal.

THE CHEFS
Just a little “off kilter” but we like to see more faces per photo.

SATURDAY May 8, 2021

After our customary donuts, coffee and safety meeting, Tommy Goode led the group of 13 riders through the back roads of Bastrop County to the community of Rockne (named after Knute Rockne, for real). We proceeded to Rosanky where we ate lunch at El Borrego de Oro.  After lunch we rode to Smithville for our last gas stop. After Tommy got lost twice in the tiny town of Smithville, he finally led us through the town of Upton and back to Bastrop! The ride was 70 miles round trip.  Chase was provided by Jerry Krenek and Diana Hybner.

Twisted Sisters Ride Sept 23-26, 2021

Twisted Sister Ride

Leakey Texas

Arrive 9-23 depart 9-26

Rides will be on Friday. Saturday, and Sunday morning.

CAMPERS

The campground is available for anyone wanting to arrive as early as September 19th. You must call if you want to arrive before September 23. Call Julie at 830-433-1424 for questions or concerns. She is very helpful. Besides showing up, the only thing you need to do is LET ME KNOW if you are coming so we can make sure there is availability for camping. I will keep a list of the first 10 that respond. I don’t think we will have more than 10, but if we do, hopefully we can find you a camping spot somewhere.

She has 5 50 amp for $45 night and 5 30 amp for $35 night. First arrivals get first choice. There are no sewer hookups, but grey water can be released on the grass.

The campground is located on 336 about a mile north of the 336/83 intersection in Leakey. They will have a large portable sign showing you where to enter.

On your trip down, I would advise you not to drive on 337 from Vanderpool to Leakey in a RV. Your brakes won’t be very happy-dangerious curves and up and downs. Great for scooter riding!

Motel/Cabins

The Historic Leakey Inn

527 S Hwy 83

Leakey Texas, 78873

We have 10 rooms reserved. Google https://leakeyinn.com, then property search, and 3 pages of their rooms/ cabins will appear. Decide which one you would like to reserve and call 830-486-6007 to make reservation. You will probably go to voicemail. Leave a message including that you are part of the Texas Cushman Club group arriving on Sept 23 and departing Sept 26. Dallas, the owner, will call you back a little later. Sometimes it takes her awhile, but she will call back. Please don’t use the online reservation tool. While you are on the website, click on policies at the top of the page and read cancellation policy. This area is so busy that everyone has strict cancellation policies. I made my reservations today. I recommend you do the same. 98% of the rental properties in this area are on the Frio river. Nightly rates can get to $200 very quickly.

We need to have one pot luck dinner. I need volunteers to donate a few dollars to buy BBQ, leaving the veggies, etc., for everyone else to bring. We did this in WV and it worked really well.

There is not much shopping in this area. Lots of people come to play in the clean, clear, cool Frio river. We might join them one afternoon.

If someone will share pictures or comments, I’ll do a post after the fun is done!
